Series–Mental Mastery Techniques for Rapid Change: NLP

What is NeuroLinguistic Programming (NLP)?
NLP is the science of understanding and changing the way the brain stores, processes, and responds to information. It is a collection of concepts and techniques intended to understand and change human behavior-patterns. NLP helps to shift your perception or emotional/conditioned responses. It is a very powerful (yet fun) tool for change.

There are so many ways to use NLP–it can be both simple and complicated. Communication channels such as words, voice/sound, eye movement, body movement, touch, and spacial elements can be used to influence the brain.

A familiar example of a more simple NLP technique is if you're feeling nervous speaking in front of a group of people, imagining them in their underwear or with big red ball clown noses, to make them seem/feel less threatening.

Although NLP techniques can be used on their own, I mostly weave them into my dialog, body movement, and voice during coaching sessions or use NLP mental exercises with my clients when I get them into a hypnotic state to help them shift their emotions or patterns of unconscious response to things.

NLP is also useful for improving communication between people, improving performance, conditioning success habits, improving sales and persuasion techniques, and increasing learning capabilities.

It's difficult to get a sense of NLP from explanations. The best way to understand it is to experience it.

How Did NLP Develop?

NLP was developed in the 1970's by Richard Bandler and John Grinder. They began working together to understand how some of the best known psychotherapists (like Virginia Satir) and hypnotherapists (like Milton Erickson) were achieving results they did. It rapidly grew into a field and methodology all its own, based around the skill of modeling exceptional people to identify the key aspects of others behaviors and approaches that led them to be capable of outstanding results in their fields.

How Can I Learn to Use NLP for Myself?

A few simple resources I recommend to start with are:

NLP: The New Technology of Achievement, Edited by Steve Andreas and Charles Faulkner
Awaken the Giant Within, Tony Robbins (his adaptation is called neuro-associative conditioning)
Psycholinguistics: The Language of the Mind, Dr. Patrick Porter (my former boss and mentor)
Persuasion Skills Black Book: Practical NLP Language Patterns for Getting The Response You Want, Rintu Basu (Rintu's site) for free e-courses and newsletter with techniques

You can also try out NLP by working with me privately. I offer several options for in-person and distance coaching that will help you utilize the tools of the mind to make whatever changes you desire more easily and quickly, whether for personal or business/financial goals.
