Series–Mental Mastery Techniques for Rapid Change: EFT

What is EFT?
Simply put, EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique) is a form of acupressure that works with the energetic and emotional elements of illness/disease, stress, trauma, and pain to create a more balanced, healthy, positive and productive mind and body, leading to greater health, happiness, success, and satisfaction in life.

It is based on the same energy meridians used for over 5,000 years in traditional acupuncture to treat physical and emotional ailments, but without the invasiveness of needles. Instead, simple tapping with the fingertips is used to input kinetic energy onto specific meridians on the head, face, torso, chest, and wrists / hands / fingers while you think about and state your specific problem (an unwanted emotion or action, a traumatic event or hurtful memory, an urge or addiction, a disease, condition, or pain, etc.) along with positive affirmations for forgiving, loving, and accepting yourself or choosing to experience a different feeling or outcome.

How Does EFT Work?
The combination of tapping the energy meridians and voicing positive affirmations works to clear the “short-circuit” (the emotional block) from your body’s bioenergy system, thus restoring your mind and body’s balance, which is essential for optimal health and the healing of physical disease and pain.

Although it is still often overlooked in Western medicine, emotional health is absolutely essential to your physical health and the ability to heal.

No matter how devoted you are to a healthy diet and lifestyle, you will not be able to achieve your body’s optimal state if emotional barriers stand in your way.

How Did EFT Develop?
The pioneer of EFT, Gary Craig, has seen outstanding results since developing EFT over a decade ago based on TFT (Thought Field Therapy) by his mentor, Roger Callahan. Because of its very high rate of success, the use of EFT has been spreading rapidly, and medical/healing practitioners using EFT can now be found all across the world. Thanks to the documented science of Quantum Physics as well as organizations such as ACEP (Association of Comprehensive Energy Psychology), there is extensive research being conducted on many aspects of energy psychology and energy medicine with mounting evidence of its validity. And EFT often works where all else has failed.

What Can EFT Be Used For?
More and more uses are being demonstrated by trained practitioners and laypersons all the time. Here are just some of its typical uses:
* Remove Negative Emotions or Limiting Beliefs
* Reduce Food Cravings or Addictions
* Reduce or Eliminate Pain
* Neutralize Negative Memories and Their Reactions (such as PTSD)
* Implement Positive Goals
* Eliminate Unhealthy Habits and Instill Positive Ones
* Boost Confidence and Self-Esteem

Okay, I’m Ready to Give EFT A Try. How Do I Do It?
The basic EFT sequence is very straightforward and generally takes people only a few minutes to learn. They have the slight advantage of me personally showing them the tapping points and guiding them through creating and stating the the affirmation or choices statement, but you should be able to pick up the technique relatively quickly.

With a little practice, you can perform each round in less than a minute.

Due to space constraints in this ezine, I will not go through the technique here. However, I have included links below for video demonstrations of the basic and specialized tapping for various problems. You can get a more comprehensive guide for using EFT by visiting and requesting the f-r-e-e EFT Manual.

(Keep in mind that some of the points and statements various practitioners use are slightly different; there’s no ABSOLUTE right way.)

But It Looks Too Weird to Take Seriously
While some people are initially taken aback (and sometimes amused) by the tapping and affirmation process of EFT, others are initially skeptical and even fearful of the principles that EFT is based on. The electromagnetic energy that flows through the body and regulates our health (known as the “energy body”) is only recently becoming recognized and understood in Western cultures, which has been trained and focused only on the tangible physical body.

I must admit that I, too, was skeptical of EFT when I was first introduced to it years ago. I dabbled and experimented a bit in the basic technique, and got some sporadic results with myself and my clients, but not consistently enough to stick with it. A couple of years ago I had the opportunity to listen to some amazing teleconference calls with experts in various fields and healing practices who had been researching, using, and perfecting EFT techniques to initiate quick and often astounding outomes in a wide array of physical, mental, and emotional conditions.

Thus, I began learning the new techniques and using them with a majority of my clients, getting good to phenomenal results myself. Now I am using EFT with myself on an almost daily basis and making sure to teach it to my clients to use for themselves.

Give it a try and email me with your experiences (good, bad, neutral). Remember that some issues will be best resolved by working with a trained EFT practitioner, preferably in person (though not essential). Call me if you would like me to help you work on a stubborn issue.

Happy tapping!

    I LOVE that technique. It works for PTSD very well.

    • Lisa Smith says:

      Thanks for sharing, Chantal. Yes, EFT has been found to be extremely helpful with PTSD. We’ve been working hard to get the VA to allow EFT practitioners to come and work with the vets but they haven’t been that receptive. EFT is getting deep and lasting results far beyond the old methods of drugs, talk therapy, shock treatments, etc.
      Here is some info about that: It was also used with the people of Sandy Hook after the mass shootings there and incredible healing took place.
