Would You Rather Die Than Change?

Change – Adapt – Grow
Resist – Struggle – Die

I was whitewater rafting in West Virginia once and got unexpectedly tossed out of the raft. Even though the water was shallow and I had a life vest on, my first response was to panic and flail about in the tumultuous water, which only served to give me a mouth full of water and keep me stuck in the swirling rapids. In a panic, I thought, "Oh no–I'm going to drown!"

Thankfully, within a few seconds, I remembered the direction given by our instructor during our morning preparations–"If you fall out of the boat, remain calm. Turn onto your back, hold onto your life vest, and point your feet downstream. Continue to let yourself float and the water to carry you with it until you're out of the rapids, then you can swim toward a nearby raft or the shore and wait for someone to pick you up safely."

I followed the instructions exactly, and was able to get picked up as promised. I stopped struggling and resisting the situation, allowed myself to go with the flow, directed my body to move with the current, and waited until the waters were more calm for me to start swimming toward my goal again. Non-resistance is what saved me.

It's interesting how as humans we both fear and desire change.

We get bored when things are too much the same for too long. And yet we also get scared when our familiar routine gets shaken up. It's a human dichotomy.

So what's going on there?

Although we have a need for variety and the unknown, we'd rather it be something that we instigate and feel some sense of control over. The fear comes in when those elements are missing–especially the sense of control.

When change seems to be initiated outside of our intentions, planning, and control, a majority of people begin resisting, trying to keep the change from happening. Unfortunately, this only serves to prolong the natural flow of the change and causes a person to push back and struggle against the energy of it. When that happens, they waste their precious life energy on pushing back, which is often a futile effort. It's like trying to push back the incoming tide. Eventually you become exhausted and use up your energy, your joy, your opportunities, even your life.

Ultimately, nothing stays the same. It can't. The Law of Circulation states that energy is constantly moving and must continue to circulate. If you are not the one to instigate a change, the "outside world" (or the Universe) will be the one instigating it. Change can happen TO you or BY you. You are the creator of your own reality. You are the one writing the script, believe it or not.

"If you're comfortable, you're not growing." And as a business owner, you're going to have to get comfortable with being un comfortable in order to be successful.

If you can learn to instigate change when you recognize it's time (you start to feel that restlessness, or you recognize familiarity or comfort has become a safety net for you), you will immediately begin to be in charge of it. If you wait, it will begin to show up first in little ways then bigger ways until we get the big boot to the curb by the Universe telling us it's time to do our part in the Law of Circulation.

If air doesn't move, it loses oxygen and becomes useless (or poisonous). If water doesn't move, it becomes stagnant and cannot provide life anymore. If we don't move, we atrophy.

By initiating or accepting–even embracing–change, instead of resisting it, we create the opportunity to adapt our selves, which leads to growth.

Change – Adapt – Grow
Resist – Struggle – Die

The choice is yours.
