Series–Mental Mastery Techniques for Rapid Change: Hypnosis
Hypnosis is a perfectly safe, relaxing technique that can benefit anyone. It is simply a focused state of awareness that increases the ability of the subconscious to absorb, accept & respond to information and ideas. It accesses the ultimate means of heightening motivation by programming your subconscious (reflective) mind to work in cooperation with your conscious (reactive) mind to achieve desired results.
You're already familiar with hypnosis, although you may not realize it. You go through this altered state of consciousness at least twice a day–when you are crossing over into sleep and when you are waking up. You also go into a "trance" state anytime you
do something very rote or familiar (where you go on "autopilot"). Driving a common route or a very straight road without a lot of visual variety (such as a desert road) is a typical way people go into "trance," as is staring at a fire, watching a movie or TV, or reading a book. Any time you get lost in your thoughts or focused on something and tune out the environment around you or lose track of time, you have entered the hypnotic, or subconscious, state.
People who do not understand hypnosis are often wary or skeptical of it. They think of it as entertainment, magic, or some mystical form of control.
In reality, meditation, yoga, prayer, and repetitive/focused tasks result in the same altered state of awareness. Anyone who can concentrate for a few moments and use their imagination can learn self-hypnosis. Kids are great at it because they are mostly functioning at the subconscious levels of alpha and theta, which is what allows them to learn so much information so quickly (and have vivid imaginations!).
Although everyone (with rare exceptions) is capable of entering the hypnotic state, and do so every day without "trying," some people have a hard time being guided into this state, so using hypnosis as a tool for change would not be the best choice for them (this is one reason why I use other techniques to assist my clients with their changes; I will discuss them in future parts of this series). There are a few tests that I use to help determine a person's ability to be guided into hypnosis (written, visual, physical and imaginative). One is the Eye Roll Test, which you can access on the Consultation Page of my other website (www.hypnocoachlisa.com/Consult.html).
There are many techniques to use to help guide someone into a hypnotic state, so determing each individual's induction style or propensity is essential to helping them be successful with hypnosis, as is making sure they can feel safe and relaxed with the "hypnotic guide" (such as myself). I also have my clients listen to a conditioning process for several days before I do their first personalized hypnosis session (which gives me feedback about what inductions would work best for them and helps them get "trained" into entering the hypnotic state.
Once I have someone in a hypnotic state, there are many techniques I can use to help program their mind for the changes they want. Although change can happen in an instant and last if the conditions are right, repetition increases learning and permanency, so I make personalized recordings for my clients to listen to daily for a period of time.
