A client recently emailed me to say she was feeling like a melt-down was coming on, as there were "just too many things to do."
Overwhelm comes when you're focusing on too many things at once. As solopreneurs and business owners, this can be a common occurrence, and one that can sabotage your efforts, peace of mind, and health, so you'll want to get good at recognizing it early on and utilizing quick and effective ways to move from overwhelm to focus and action.
A few of my suggestions are below:
1. Create an action list. Often just getting it out of the immense jumble in our head on to paper creates a sense of relief so our brain doesn't have to keep track of remembering it all as well as thinking of ways to get it done. And often, it appears less daunting once we have it on paper.
2. Prioritize your tasks. Once you have them written down, put them in some sort of order of action. This can be based on several criteria:
a. urgency/time (absolute deadlines)
b. order (what has to be done before another related task can be done), or
c. outcome (e.g.–serving clients to maintain your commitment to them, or
converting a hot lead to a client to get $ in the bank account)
3. Assign. What absolutely has to be done by you, and what can you delegate? This is a real sticking point with business owners–you can't do it all yourself and have to be willing to outsource or you will become a bottleneck to your businesse's growth in addition to experiencing unhealthy overwhelm.
3. Take focused action. Once you create your list & prioritize, it's time to focus on the 1st thing on the top of the list and forget about the other things. Stop multi-tasking! I know, I know, I'm guilty of it, too, on occasion (women especially are), but when you feel like you're in overwhelm, it really makes a difference in how you feel when you focus on a single task to completion.
It's also important to look at a pattern of overwhelm and the practical as well as mindset elements at play with such a pattern. Identifying and eliminating those inner and outer contributors will decrease the tendency to create unnecessary overwhelm in your life.
EFT tapping is also something that I utilize when I start to feel overwhelmed, and encourage my clients to do, as well.
At first, you might think, "but I have too much to do to take time to tap!" But I promise that if you take a few minutes to tap on the overwhelming thoughts and the feelings they're bringing, you'll notice a better ability to relax, problem solve, and focus on the action you need to take to check those priorities off the list as DONE!
Here's a quick tapping process to do when you're feeling overwhelmed (if you're not familiar with tapping, watch my video here):
Rate your intensity of overwhelm 0-10 with 10 being the highest
(Start tapping side of hand–karate chop)
EVEN THOUGH I'M FEELING QUITE OVERWHELMED WITH TOO MUCH TO DO AND NOT ENOUGH TIME, I CHOOSE TO DEEPLY & COMPLETELY LOVE AND ACCEPT ALL MY FEELINGS…
EVEN THOUGH I AM FEELING SO OVERWHELMED, AND I DON'T LIKE TO FEEL THIS WAY, I STILL CHOOSE TO DEEPLY & COMPLETELY LOVE & ACCEPT MYSELF…
EVEN THOUGH I HAVE WAY TOO MUCH TO DO, AND I DON'T KNOW WHERE TO START,
I ACCEPT THAT THERE IS AT LEAST ONE THING I CAN DO RIGHT NOW, AND I CHOOSE TO FOCUS JUST ON THAT.
(addressing negative side of issue)
(TH) There's too much to do!
(EB) I don't have enough time to do it all!
(SE) I wish my life was simpler.
(UE) I can't believe how much is on my plate!
(UN) It's just too much!
(CH) It's not fair that I have so much to take care of!
(CB) I feel so overwhelmed, I can't even think straight
(UA) There has to be a better way to handle this!
(TH) I put too much pressure on myself; I need to let go!
Breathe. Tune in to the feeling of overwhelm again and give it a rating. Repeat the above cycle until you get to a 6 or lower, then move on to the next round.
EVEN THOUGH THERE IS SO MUCH TO DO AND SOMETIMES I DON'T WANT TO DO ANYTHING, I CAN STILL MAKE CHOICES THAT WILL KEEP ME MOVING FORWARD
EVEN THOUGH I SEEM TO NEVER GET TO THE END OF MY "TO DO" LIST, I CHOOSE
TO PRIORITIZE MY HEALTH AND HAPPINESS…
EVEN THOUGH I FEEL SO OVERWHELMED WITH THE RESPONSIBILITIES I HAVE IN MY LIFE RIGHT NOW, I CHOOSE TO TAKE CONTROL AND DO WHAT I CAN RIGHT NOW.
(addressing the positive side)
(TH) There's so much to do I feel overwhelmed!
(EB) But all I have to focus on is what's here right now
(SE) I can choose to create a better balance in my life
(UE) I can take a deep breath, RIGHT NOW, roll my shoulders back and smile
(BREATHE SLOWLY IN & OUT, shift body, smile)
(UN) It's important for me to take care of myself.
(CH) It's important for me to make time for eating 3 good meals each day & drinking water
(CB) What if I just plan and prioritize what I want to get done and stick to the plan?
(UA) What if I stop and focus on what's most important and what will make me feel good?
(TH) I'm so grateful for this tapping, and I choose to take better care of myself, clear the
obstacles, release judgments, settle for "good enough" and take things one step at a time so I can have more joy, and energy, and peace of mind.
DEEP BREATH. Check your rating. If not at 0, repeat the two tapping sequences above without a break in between. Keep tapping until you reach a 0 at the end of the 2nd round.
If you get stuck at a certain #, go back and tap on the specific issues that are causing you stress and interfering with your joy & peace.
