Decide-Commit-SucceedAre You Interested, Or Committed?

One of my success mentors, John Assaraf, has a saying that I love: "When you're interested in having something, you'll only do what's convenient; when you're committed, you'll do whatever it takes." 

I have kept this mantra top of mind when I am setting goals or find myself not achieving one. I ask myself, "Am I willing to do what it takes to achieve this goal? Am I doing what is convenient, or am I doing what's necessary (and out of my comfort zone)?"

There's a reason why not everyone is successful. It's because not everyone is willing to do what it takes. 

People often want success to come to them, or expect that if they take a few actions, it will happen. But to get what you've never got, you must do what you've never done. Often you need to do it over and over. Or you mush persevere in the face of obstacles. So many quit when the going gets tough.

When doing a Business Strategy Session with a struggling business owner, I ask them, "How committed are you, on a scale of 1-10 with 10 being 100% committed, to solving the issues we've uncovered that are keeping you from having all the clients, money & impact you want in your business?"  Many times, they'll say "10." Yet when I tell them what they're going to have to do in order to get that (often including investing in expert coaching), their comfort level is pushed and they find excuses not to take the action necessary.

Money is the #1 excuse people throw out, yet if the commitment is really at a 10, it wouldn't be an excuse. People always find the money to pay for what they are highly committed to have. Look at drug addicts. They can always get creative about ways to find money to get their drugs because the "need" is urgent.

Time and time again, I have found the money to invest in expert help and resources to grow my business (so far, over $50k). I've had to make sacrifices with my time commitments, often missing out on events like fun events with friends, birthdays, bridal showers, weddings, annual family reunions. But my commitment to have more of what I want in life and help more people is strong enough and the payoff big enough that it is worth those temporary sacrifices.

My mentor, David Neagle, says that once you make a decision to have something, the means to achieve it will show up. But it won't show up until you've made a truly committed decision. Many people think they have made a decision, but they haven't committed 100% to it. They are playing lip service, but they have a "back-up plan" in case it doesn't work out. If you have a back-up plan, YOU ARE NOT 100% COMMITTED. You must burn your bridges.

Another teacher and mentor of mine, Tony Robbins, says this:

“A real decision is measured by the fact that you’ve taken a new action. If there’s no action, you haven’t truly decided… The most important thing you can do to achieve your goals is to make sure that as soon as you set them, you immediately begin to create momentum. The most important rules that I ever adopted to help me in achieving my goals were those I learned from a very successful man who taught me to first write down the goal, and then to never leave the site of setting a goal without first taking some form of positive action toward its attainment.” 

I love that! Never set a goal without taking some action right away towards its attainment. Create momentum.

What's a goal that you have been paying lip service to achieving and have not yet? If it's TRULY essential for you to attain it, stop right now and do these 5 things:

1. Write it down. Make sure it is specific, measurable, and has a deadline.
2. Commit 100% to doing whatever it takes to achieve it. Feel that in your bones, say it out loud, and tell at least one other person (only someone who can be supportive of you and your goal; hint–the author of this blog is one).
3. Now write down anything you can do RIGHT NOW to move toward its attainment (hint: scheduling a MMM Strategy Session with me would be one).
4. Choose at least one of those things and DO IT NOW before you do anything else!
5. Share your goal and commitment with your supportive social network (online and offline), with me, and with your felllow MMM Blog readers. We will support you 100%!
